The artist–art dealer relationship as a marketing channel

This article studies the relationship between the artist and the art dealer, interpreted as being the two members of a “marketing channel”, as defined by industrial organization and marketing science literature. The result for both parties depends on the individual effort that each of them puts in; uncoordinated effort levels are shown to result in an inefficient outcome. Efficiency, subject to different institutional settings and agreements, is studied here with specific reference to the visual arts. The results may easily apply to the stage of creation of a number of different artistic goods. Possible ways to reach efficient outcomes in marketing channels in artistic fields are suggested and discussed.     

内蒙古地区武术社会文化价值取向调查

本文采用问卷调查、专家访谈、集体座谈方法对内蒙古地区不同武术人群武术的社会文化价值取向进行研究.结果发现内蒙古地区不同武术人群对武术的社会文化价值的取向存在一定的差异性.因武术的社会文化价值在不同人群中的认同取向不同,所以在武术教学训练与社会实践过程中,应尽量满足参加者的价值趋向的同时,应全方位的体现武术文化的生态性和宇宙观价值取向,才能更好地发挥武术的社会文化价值在实践的作用.     

Ten years after: The rise and fall of managerial autonomy in Pompeii

In September 1997, an ad hoc law (Law no. 352/1997) gave the archaeological site of Pompeii a new status. Its previous status as a local branch of the Ministry of Culture (the Soprintendenza) was reconfigured as an autonomous entity (Soprintendenza autonoma). In July 2008, the Italian Prime Minister declared a one year state of emergency in Pompeii, appointing a special Commissioner (Commissario straordinario) in order to cope with “the serious critical situation of the archeological area” (OPCM 3692/2008). The aim of the paper is to review the process of change in Pompeii over ten years, observing major institutional transformations and analyzing the evolution of activities and human and financial resources management. Beyond the substantive elements of interest (the mis-management of one of the most important archaeological sites in the world), the paper sheds lights on the role of accountability in the cultural sector and on the distinctive features of Italian public administration, questioning the existence of a path of international convergence in public sector change.     

When culture meets digital platforms: value creation and stakeholders’ alignment in big data use

Research on big data has highlighted that a crucial element to create value from data is the capability of aligning different stakeholders’ interests. However, it has not yet been investigated empirically how this process of alignment can be realized. We conduct a multiple case study on the two leading platforms involved in the online dissemination of cultural heritage – Europeana and Google Arts & Culture. Our findings reveal that a platform overtakes a rival one when it turns on multiple drivers of value creation in such a way that the drivers contribute to realigning the interests expressed by the stakeholders whose strategic objectives and beliefs were formerly divergent – or simply unrelated – to each other. This capability of realigning different stakeholders’ interests is independent of the level of industry-specific knowledge that the platform orchestrator has. The dynamics we document imply that Google has assumed a system integration role in the cultural ecosystem. This generates new trade-offs for museums in the way they generate value for the tourism industry. The paper enriches our understanding of what strategies digital platforms adopt to create value in big data contexts and provides a base to continue the investigation on other ecosystems driven by big data.     

中国传统武术大众化发展的困境及对策

依附于农业文明、传统社会、中国文化……种种之下的中国武术,新时期如何在现代化进程中发挥其精神文明价值,是摆在广大武术及体育教育工作者面前的热门问题。笔者从中国传统武术文化大众化发展的困境出发,提出武术大众化传播中的原则,探讨了如何进一步传播中国传统武术文化,发挥其精髓,进一步为社会的精神文明建设服务。     

文化走出去背景下广西民间工艺美术产业发展对策

广西民间工艺美术品种类多样、特色突出,发展势头良好,但仍存在着花色品种少、市场占有率低、包装和品牌推广不够等问题。在实施民族文化走出去战略背景下,应重视民间手工艺的开发和传承,突破管理机制、人才、财税等方面的制约,加强产品精细化设计、健全产业链条、实施品牌营销,以促进广西民间工艺美术产业的发展。     

Will more liberal arts courses fix the accounting curriculum?

The appropriate curricular balance between general and accounting education has been long contested and needs resolving as evidence suggests the model used at most schools is broken. One suggested fix would devote more of the accounting curriculum to liberal arts courses to produce accountants who could, for example, think critically and communicate effectively. However, ample evidence indicates that classical “liberal education” scarcely exists today, and what is offered in its place is often counterproductive, at worst, or adds little value at best. This paper reviews the current state of liberal education and concludes that what is actually delivered today by many arts and sciences colleges does not achieve the claimed benefits of a liberal education. Thus it falls on accounting educators to structure courses in ways that will make them exercises in liberal learning. The paper also discusses several strategies for enhancing the value of the general education component of each student’s education.
